Professor Kanatas is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with special interests in Oral Oncology, Oral and Maxillofacial Reconstruction and Clinical education. He is a full-time clinician with extensive clinical and research experience and is the author of several book chapters and co-editor of three books.

He is an international authority in patient-centred outcomes following head and neck cancer and has validated several outcome-related instruments that changed clinical practice. He is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, a co-chairman of the Bochum Free flap and Microvascular course in Germany and he is part of the team that trained 1000 surgeons from 100 countries (September 2017). He is the Lead for research (OMFS)- Leeds (Since 2015) and an Expert reviewer for the Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation (EME) Programme (NIHR), UK.

His current funded research in the University of Leeds, relates to the evaluation of the Patient Concerns Inventory (PCI) and to the efficacy of High Intensity Ultrasound (HIFU) and nanoparticles in the management of head and neck cancer.
